Our Pastor in the Paper

Brother Jon Cardwell made the news in the Anniston Star today, 3/7/2009.  It was just his photo and a brief word letting Anniston & Calhoun county know that there’s a new grace preacher in town.  You can see the news article online by CLICKING HERE.

For those checking out our webpage from either the local press or from the online source, here’s a little information about our preacher…

Jon Cardwell has recently joined the community of Anniston, Alabama as the new pastor at Sovereign Grace Baptist Church. After a brief visit to Alabama from December 9-16, 2008, the congregation called Brother Cardwell to be its pastor and he arrived in January to assume his duties and responsibilities as a minister of the gospel.
Though saved by God’s grace while serving as a deep-sea diver in the U.S. Navy, the Lord called him out of nearly 15 years of active military service to serve the crucified and risen Christ without reserve, retreat or regrets. Since 1993 Jon has served the Lord as a missionary to the Philippines, as pastor to a small congregation in southern California, and as a missionary-pastor to congregations in remote “bush” Alaska, among the Aleut people of King Cove, and the Yup’ik people of Scammon Bay.

Since symptoms of what might be Lou Gehrig’s disease began to manifest in Scammon Bay in 2007, Jon and his family had to leave their beloved Yup’ik brothers and sisters in Scammon Bay for medical treatment and evaluation in California. Still awaiting final diagnosis through the VA Hospital, Jon continues to serve the Lord despite the symptoms he experiences.

Jon and the congregation are praying that his wife, Melissa, and their 13-year-old daughter, Rachel, will be able to join him soon, as they are still out in California.

Gifted in the Hebrew language and having a servant’s heart, Brother Cardwell teaches and preaches the gospel truths of God’s sovereign grace with a depth to edify and encourage the more mature saint, yet with a simplicity that makes those truths accessible to the newest and youngest Christian believer.

Sovereign Grace Baptist Church is located on the north side of Alabama Highway 202, approximately half a mile west of Bynum Leatherwood (Hwy 109). Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m. weekly. There are two worship services on Sunday, at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and a midweek prayer meeting on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
